I am suffering from some serious SXSW envy. Every single email & post I've read in the last two weeks seems to have something to do with SXSW...and the only post I've done for the event has to do with wishing I was there. Fuckin' pathetic. Ahh, maybe next year. For all of you who are currently attending...YOU ARE LUCKY BASTARDS...and I am jealous.
Have a good weekend.

GREAT NEW MUSIC: Plants and Animals "Parc Avenue"
It's absolutely beautiful out today, and so how apropos that I'm posting about the beautiful new album from Montreal's Plants and Animals, "Parc Avenue". I noticed that Pitchfork gave the album a pretty good review today, and I'm not about to buck that trend with anything but praise as well. Their sound is rooted in the same music that influences bands like Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper, Grizzly Bear and to some extent Arcade Fire (and successfully not sounding much like these bands at all): 70's rock, front-porch folk, hushed (and not-so-hushed) psychedelic and little art rock for good measure. Hell, they even use a sax & cheerleading shouts (along with the handclaps!) in one song. It's so refreshing to hear music that is capable of being so much more than the sum of it's parts (and influences). The whole album is highly recommended!
"Parc Avenue" is out now via Secret City Records.

MIND-BLOWING NEW MUSIC: Evangelicals "The Evening Descends"
I have been enjoying the shit out of the new Evangelicals album (The Evening Descends) for awhile, and I somehow missed posting about it. Who knows why, all I know is that it is one of the best albums to come out this year by far and if you haven't picked a copy up yet then get to it! Maybe you were waiting for me to post about it. Well now you have no excuse. This is one of those albums I'm not going to even try and describe, I'd rather let the music do that for me. SUBTLE: New album & tour
After catching Subtle's show last year (with Sunset Rubdown & Magic Weapon), I have vowed to see them again live any chance I get. Adam "Doseone" Drucker and the rest of Subtle put on such an unbelievingly amazing live set (I hadn't heard their music before this show), that I ran out immediately and purchased "for hero:for fool". Amazing. Their latest album "ExitingARM", is set to drop May 13th via Lex Records (check out the track "Unlikely Rock Shock" from said album, below). VICE Signs Dark Meat!!
One of Athens' (GA) finest, Dark Meat, a psychedelic orchestra/collective comprised of 17(!) members who describe their music as "THE STOOGES meets CRAZY HORSE with killer Stax / Funeral / Marching band horns, wailing gospel-style female backing vocals, ripping guitar leads and free jazz freakouts" has just been signed by VICE Records (Black Lips, Panthers, Justice, Bloc Party, etc.)! The new album, "Universal Indians" (an ICTH fave!), will be re-released on April 8th with three unreleased bonus tracks, followed by the release of a vinyl edition on April 22nd (it was originally on Orange Twin Records). Dark Meat put on one hell of a live show, so I suggest you check 'em out at of those dates below!
